Astigmatism

Astigmatism is an asymmetric curve of the front lens of the eye, the cornea. Ideally, the cornea is a perfectly circular dome. But if it is oval or “spoon-shaped” a blurred image is created. Astigmatism is common and can be associated with myopia, hyperopia, and if occurring alone is called “mixed” astigmatism (half myopic a., half hyperopic a.). At Roholt Vision Institute, the techniques of astigmatism correction have been refined over 15 years and thousands of cases. Dr. Roholt will use micro-fine incisions, called limbal relaxing incisions (LRI) or LASIK/PRK as appropriate to your CustomCorrection to help you attain the highest visual performance.

Advanced Glaucoma Detection Technology

Glaucoma facts:
Over 3 million Americans have glaucoma but only half of those know they have it. Approximately 120,000 are blind from glaucoma, accounting for 9% to 12% of all cases of blindness in the U.S

Glaucoma is the second leading cause of blindness in the U.S. and the first leading cause of preventable blindness.

The Disease:
The optic nerve is the structure which takes the visual information from the eye to be interpreted by the brain. If the optic nerve is not functioning properly, the visual information will not reach the brain. Glaucoma is a disease that results in the death of nerve cells within the optic nerve. As the cells die there is a large crater-like center to the optic nerve.

Glaucoma Detection:
Glaucoma can be diagnosed when the pressure is elevated (normal pressure within the eye is between 10 and 21mm Hg). Elevated pressure or a weak optic nerve can result in a damaged optic nerve. Early changes to the optic nerve can be difficult to ascertain but with the help of the Heidelberg Retinal Tomographer (HRT II) these changes can be found sooner rather than later.

HRT II
The HRT II is noninvasive and in most cases does not require pupil dilation

Glaucoma treatment:
The best chance of saving vision when it comes to the disease of glaucoma is to diagnose it as soon as possible and treat it effectively. Roholt Vision is proud to be one of the few practices in northeast Ohio to offer Retinal Tomography. This test can help detect glaucoma far earlier than other methods and therefore allow treatment to be initiated early in the course of the disease, in time to save precious sight.

In a matter of minutes pictures are captured producing 3-D images comprised of over 28.3 million data points.

The 3-D picture is created after digital information of the optic nerve is captured

Optic Nerve
The image of the optic nerve and the analysis of the nerve is determined following section by section analysis of the optic nerve by the HRT II.

HRT II
The best use of the HRT II is to monitor the optic nerve over time and to allow the doctor to adjust the individualized treatment plan accordingly

Other testing performed at Roholt Vision Institute that is critical to diagnosing and treating glaucoma includes visual field testing, corneal thickness measurements and multiple devices to measure the pressure in the eye. Dedication to the best technology available helps to ensure the best care possible for the patients of Roholt Vision Institute.

Dry Eyes

Over six million women and approximately three million men in the U.S. have moderate or severe symptoms of the disease, and it is estimated that an additional 20 to 30 million people in this country have mild cases of dry eye.  Many people suffer unnecessarily as there are many ways to improve this condition.

What’s In a Tear?

Excellent vision and outstanding ocular comfort both depend on an adequate tear film!  The components of a healthy tear film depend on many variables such as overall health, hormone levels, diet, and environmental factors.  There are three layers to the tear film and each layer can be affected by variables independent of the other layers.

The layers include:

1. An outer oily layer that helps to reduce evaporation.

2. An aqueous layer responsible for providing the majority of the tear component

3. A mucin layer that provides a smooth surface for the tears to lie upon

If any of these layers are deficient in any way, an adequate tear film will not be possible.

What Causes Dry Eye?

Dry eyes are more common now than ever before.  Medications (such as antihistamines, antidepressants, certain blood pressure medicines, Parkinson's medications, and birth control pills), outdoor exposure, computer use, caffeine, smoking and normal aging changes all contribute to the condition of dry eyes. Dry eyes are more common in arid climates, during the use of forced air heating and with individuals who do excessive reading-either printed material or computer screens.

What are the Symptoms of Dry Eye?

Common symptoms include a scratchy feeling, redness, tired feeling, foreign body sensation, grittiness, tired eyes, overall discomfort, light sensitivity, contact lens intolerance, and intermittent blurred vision.  Women are affected three times more often than men.

A reddish stain (rose Bengal) is used to show the area of the eye most affected by the dry eye condition

How can you tell if you have dry eye syndrome?

Roholt Vision Institute spends a great deal of time and attention to the details of dry eye.  Special testing can be performed to evaluate the quantity and quality of your tears.  A measurement of the amount of tear produced over time is measured (see below) and compared to normal values.  Once this is performed, several treatment options can be utilized to improve the comfort and function of your eyes.
